Located in southern Mexico, Chiapas, Guerrero, and Oaxaca are the states with the greatest poverty and extreme poverty.

In Chiapas, 83% of its population lacks social security; in Guerrero, 58% do not have basic housing services and, in Oaxaca, 35% do not have access to food. These figures are a picture of the deficiencies suffered by 60% of the population of these entities that live in conditions of poverty and 20% in extreme poverty, according to the report “10 years of poverty measurement in Mexico, 2008 -2010 ”presented this Monday by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval) .

Since 2008, Coneval measures poverty through a multidimensional method that provides a more detailed picture. For this, it analyzes six indicators: current per capita income, educational lag, access to health services, access to social security, quality and spaces in the home and, finally, access to basic housing services.

1.- Chiapas

Although in the last decade Chiapas presented a 0.6% decrease in the population living in poverty, this entity is located in the first place in the measurement of 2018. In these years it went from having 77 to 76.4% of its inhabitants in that condition.

Regarding extreme poverty, Zacatecas also shows a decrease from 9.5% to 3.4% in the same period.

The main lack of Zacatecans is access to social security. According to Coneval’s report, 62% do not enjoy it.
