The president remarked that there can be no ‘rich political parties with poor people’ and asked the leaders of the political formations to demonstrate in this regard.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked the political parties on Wednesday to reduce their expenses by 50 percent and return that money to the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP).

“They have to reduce their expenses and they have to return the money to the Public Treasury, a percentage of those prerogatives. It is a respectful call, it is not an order, it is not by force; it is a call to act accordingly”, pointed.

“At least, they should reduce their expenses … by 50 percent,” he said

The president’s suggestion comes after the Prerogatives Commission of the National Electoral Institute (INE) approved on Tuesday, in extraordinary session, financing for political parties of 5,239 million, 651 pesos.

In comparison, for 2019, this commission gave financing of 4,965 million pesos.

López Obrador stressed that there can be no “rich parties with poor people” and called on the leaders of each of the political formations to demonstrate on the issue.

“I want to hear that they are the first, progressive parties,” he said.
