The shoemakers of the terroir can take advantage of the US trade war with China to conquer new export markets.

León.- The shoemakers of the terroir can take advantage of the United States trade war with China to conquer new export markets, but for that, they will require ‘being sharp’.

The executive president of the Chamber of Footwear Industry of the State of Guanajuato (CICEG), Alejandro Gómez Tamez, considered that the increase of US tariffs on Chinese footwear is a good opportunity for local producers, but few companies with an export capacity

Executive President of the Chamber of the Footwear Industry of the State of Guanajuato (CICEG), Alejandro Gómez Tamez.

It benefits us, yes, but in order to take advantage of it we need to have the (certified) factories, with the workforce so that when orders arrive, there are those who can supply them, ”he said.

Last week CICEG executives were in New York at an event with the FRA (Association of Retailers and Footwear Distributors in the United States) and the topic was discussed.

All of the people who participated in the event talked about changing their source of supply from China to other countries, especially Asia, Vietnam is already full, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, others are developing, and for them Mexico is an alternative.

Last week CICEG executives were in New York in an event with the FRA.

They mentioned the word Mexico a lot in the presentations and the topic that corresponds to us is to develop the industry so that the orders can be supplied, we know that there are many American buyers in Mexico but the challenge is to find factories that have the capacity to export ”.

He mentioned that Americans buy approximately 2.4 billion pairs of shoes a year, which is mostly textile and synthetic, and to lesser extent leather shoes.

Mexico exports 26 million pairs per year to the world, and 20 go to the US (mostly leather), at an average price of $ 20 per pair. The last four years export to that region did not grow.

Mexico exports 26 million pairs per year to the world, and 20 go to the US.

“How much can it grow? If we do nothing, it can probably grow marginally in two or three million pairs, as a result of which they are looking for other alternatives. But, if we really want to take advantage of the situation, factories have to be developed, investments need to be made, a commitment from buyers and manufacturers for long-term plans, ”he concluded.

In León and the Pueblos del Rincón there are about 100 shoe companies that regularly export to the US, Central America, and others, “but in the hands of about 20 90 percent of the export is concentrated.”

To be more competitive, CICEG is working with the German firm Roland Berger.
