Santa María Bay Sinaloa, a wonderful island full of birds

In the bay of Santa Maria, in the state of Sinaloa, hundreds of frigates contrast with the blue sky, birds of intense black plumage, blue-footed boobies, swallows, seagulls, skimmers, Canadian ducks, sea roosters, earwigs, a variety of birds of 116 different species.

The bay has an approximate size of 54 thousand hectares composed of 111 islands and scattered islets in the municipality of Angostura up to Navolato and due to its variety of flora and fauna make it one of the richest ecosystems in the world.

The extensive lagoon serves as an incubator for hundreds of species and where thousands of coastal fishermen come together every year to capture shrimp, various public and private organizations have joined efforts in an attempt to conserve it.

The main objective is to have the Natural Protected Area decreed by the Federal Government to prevent the environment from being transformed because there is a great variety of endemic species and it contains some animals in danger of extinction.

It is one of the most important coastal wetlands of Northwest Mexico, with diverse habitats that include: muddy plains, islands, mangroves, estuaries, dunes and crop areas that are protected by two large islands (Saliaca and Altamura), which sustain a wealth.

Its vast muddy plains and strategic location in the Pacific migratory corridor favors the presence of migratory and resident birds, making it critical for the survival of these species.

The island of the birds is a very accessible place and you can get to it from the town of La Reforma, from where boats leave to go to the bay.
