Crisis in the health sector

AMLO Austerity. Hospitals of these entities also present a reduction of support for interns and even cancellation of basic services, which puts the integrity of inpatients at risk.

The effects of cuts in the health sector budget, which include a shortage of doctors and nurses, shortages of medication, reduction of support for interns and even cancellation of air conditioning, have already spread to hospitals in 24 states.

The critical situation that the sector is experiencing in Tamaulipas, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Puebla and Mexico City, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, Baja California Sur , Tabasco, Queretaro, Chihuahua, Nayarit, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Baja California, Colima and Sonora.

The Issste delegate in Durango, Patricia Herrera, assured that the institute is going through a critical moment since they do not have the medicines or enough medical and administrative personnel.

The supply of medicines, he said, has gone from 97% to 80 %, putting at risk even transplanted people, so he warned that if this problem is not solved “we would enter a serious situation”.

So far, around 100 important positions have been added, because previously the nursing area and doctors were not touched; nevertheless, he acknowledged that the operability of the hospitals has not been affected.

The cuts by the federal government in the sector already impact hospitals and clinics in San Luis Potosí, with a 50% reduction in support for doctors and nurses to the supply of medicines, which is guaranteed only 70%.

In Yucatán, the austerity policy of the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador already suffers, for example, in the cancellation of the use of artificial climate in various areas of the hospitals, such as the Issste Regional Hospital in Mérida, just when the temperatures reach up to 52 degrees of thermal sensation.

The most affected by the cuts is the public hospital staff, mainly from 59 urban and rural health centers in Quintana Roo, where 45% of the temporary workers of the Ministry of Health will not be rehired and at least 45 have already been removed from their facilities. functions, while other 246 who work for the Prospera will remain in office until December 31.

Shortage of 50% in antiretroviral drugs, lack of oncological drugs, supply in pharmacies of little more than half of materials and supplies and suspension of hiring of temporary personnel to cover vacations and incapacities, are some of the problems faced by clinics and hospitals of the Ministry of Health of Veracruz.

The decrease of 30 million pesos to the budget of the sector in Baja California Sur affects the operation of basic care for families in rural areas, said Secretary of Health, Víctor Flores.

In Tabasco, although the supply of medicines is being regularized, 500 workers assigned to Seguro Popular were fired in January, while vector workers denounced the lack of payments.

Due to these cuts, Querétaro has stopped receiving 50 million from the Federation alone from the Prospera social program, which has had to absorb the state coffers. Although there has not been a budget decrease in the drug category, there are delays in the delivery of these.

After the shortage of medicines in 11 hospitals in Chihuahua, in the middle of this month, the General Hospital of Ciudad Juárez was forced to suspend the emergency service for more than 36 hours, treating only patients with a “red code”.

Personnel from the Chihuahuan Health Institute also reported that the hospital sector has a shortage of medicines and healing material, not counting the negative impacts on medical benefits.

Authorities in Nayarit, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Sonora also say that they are going through a complicated situation because the supply of medicines and other supplies is guaranteed in the short term.

In the case of Baja California, despite the fact that the federal government increased the budget of the sector, only 20% of those resources arrived, which impacted on the provision of medical services and forced the operations to be rescheduled.

Although the Health Secretariat of Colima informed that until yesterday it had not been notified of a budget cut, it recognized that there is a lack of personnel, mainly in the Maternal and Child Hospital, where 191 places are needed.
