For each pet that lives in a home, two more roam the streets.

According to information from the municipality of San Nicolás de los Garza, there are around 3 million domestic animals in the metropolitan area between dogs and cats, however, two million live on the street.

Daniel Carrillo, Secretary of Human Development of San Nicolás, revealed that of the two million animals on public roads, according to non-governmental organizations, half a million are dogs and 1 and a half million are cats.

He said that in the metropolitan area of Monterrey there are cases of zoophilia, but that in his municipality they still do not have reports.

Carrillo said that in the case of San Nicolás they have attended up to 70 calls per week of violence and animal abuse.

Considered, like some specialists, that each animal species must be treated individually in the law that is under discussion in the Legislative Power.

“There are some cases of zoophilia. In the case of San Nicolás have not reported, at least to the authorities some case like this, but there are cases of zoophilia, people who have some subject of sentimental relationship with the animal.

“We are in diapers with the issue of education, in responsible animal ownership. The latest data, which are not official, but from civil society organizations, are half a million dogs on the streets, and a million and a half cats, which is not inside the house. The uncontrolled population is greater than the controlled population.

“There must be 3 million of them all. Almost one to one (pet) per inhabitant, even when there are many inhabitants who do not have (animals), “he said.

He commented that it is possible to advance in regulatory matters by having all the municipalities well designed, both local and state government actions, and so they can intervene in a preventive and reactive manner.

According to the Nicolaita official, to design effective policies, an efficient diagnosis is required, and for that, economic resources are necessary.

“Obviously the more attention in this matter of animal welfare, you realize that the problem is not just growing, but in reality there are hidden data, in the end you realize that you are reacting to the public problems you are having, but you are not taking care of prevention, “he said.

They turn the river into pet waste

According to the group Huellas del Río, along the Santa Catarina River in the metropolitan area, there are around 500 dogs that inhabit this channel, and that make up a dump of dogs.

Cristina Marmolejo, member of this group revealed that this population of dogs in the river is derived from people who come to this site to abandon them because they no longer want them as pets.

To try to reduce this situation, Marmolejo suggests that cyclonic mesh be installed in the limits of Constitución Avenue, in the express lanes that border the Santa Catarina River, as it has observed that those who abandon dogs park in those points and descend a little to release the animals and then retire.

“In the river, from a herd that I attended, there were 30 animals in a single point, here in Monterrey at the height of this building, from Felix U. Gómez to Revolución, on the side of Morones Prieto. At that same height, there is another herd. For Churubusco, just below the Churubusco bridge, there is another herd, the problem is growing.

“It’s a dumpster of dogs, there they go and throw them. I always looked for bars to be put inside, as it is federal, you can not do much, but put bars on the outsides, the person who is going to step there (by the express lanes of Constitution Avenue), is because he is failing the car, it does not have to stop at anything else. You have to put cyclonic mesh in these stops, so they avoid pulling because that’s where they stop, “he said.

The interviewee points out that along 30 kilometers are hundreds of dogs, those that live in the place, to which she visits continuously and brings them food, but that it is impossible that only with this group can support these animals on a daily basis.

“If you get to see, there are 30 of only one herd, because I say that there are easily more than 500 dogs, and I do not know how much, because they are 30 kilometers of river, if you put that maybe every 500 meters there are 30 or 20.

“You have to sterilize to lower the index, now who wants (sterilize) does it, and who does not want no, because it is not in the law (the obligation),” said the activist.

There are reports of zoophilia

The leader of the Huellas del Río collective, Cristina Marmolejo, alerted the authorities in May about the increase in the number of cases of zoophilia, where the main victims are dogs.

The activist said in an interview that she filed complaints of rape against two dogs, events that occurred in Guadalupe and Monterrey, and called for the creation of a specialized prosecutor’s office.
