El Fuerte, Sinaloa .- On June 24, 1564, the Spanish Captain Don Francisco de Ibarra arrived on this land with a group of Spanish soldiers.

Francisco de Ibarra was born in Eibar, province of Guipúzcoa in the Basque country in Spain.

The Spaniards imitated the natives of the nation Tehueco and Zoes, building houses with dried trunks of Pitahaya, which they called San Juan Bautista de Carapoa in the El Altillo region.

Because of the belligerence of the Tehuecos, who constantly attacked them with bows and arrows, the Viceroy of New Spain Don Juan de Mendoza and Luna, Marques de Montesclaros ordered that they build a fortification several leagues upriver, which they called El Fuerte de Montesclaros in honor of the Viceroy.

Thanks to the Jesuit friars, the Spaniards were able to pacify the natives.
