Mexico will meet with 19 countries to discuss the expansion of a development plan for Central America as part of efforts to curb undocumented migration to the United States, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Friday. .
On Thursday, the Government of Mexico initiated the so-called Integral Development Plan, designed by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and with which it seeks that the people of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras have options at home. and do not be forced to migrate north.
“We already have 19 countries with which we will meet in the coming weeks for this plan and its actions to grow,” said Ebrard, during the morning conference offered by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The authority did not elaborate on which countries are part of the list, although the governments of Germany, Spain and Chile have shown their support for the approach.
At the beginning of June, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, desisted from taxing all Mexican imports after Mexico undertook to reduce the flow of migrants who escape poverty and violence in Central America and arrive in the United States.
As part of the agreement, Mexico deployed some 6,000 National Guard troops at its borders and will expand the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) program, which allows the United States to send migrants to Mexican territory while they process their applications. of asylum.
López Obrador said that an encounter with Trump is being analyzed, possibly for September, to evaluate the results of the actions with a view to halting the migration.
