The Catalan government apologized on Wednesday to the indigenous peoples of Mexico for the massacres and grievances committed by the Spaniards during the conquest (1519-1521) of the territory known today as Mexico. In a visit to the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI), the Minister of External Action of the Generalitat, Alfred Bosch, showed his support for the indigenous peoples and stressed that they will work hand in hand to recover “all the dignity that would never have to have been lost. ” “Let us be clear that the conquest and colonization introduced discrimination and marginalization,” he said.

Saúl Vicente Vázquez, director of international affairs at the INPI, said he was honored by the apology and stressed that as indigenous peoples of Mexico, “on behalf of the Mexican government” support the “struggle for self-determination,” in reference to the separatist claims of the Government Catalan. Hugo Vilar Ortíz, general coordinator of indigenous rights at INPI, said that they would expect the same behavior from the Spanish State.

Last March, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, raised a strong controversy in Spain when it was revealed that he had sent a letter to the king of Spain and to Pope Francis demanding their apology for the wrongs committed during the conquest of what is now Mexico. .

The Government of Spain and leaders of different political parties rejected such claim and the President of the Executive, Pedro Sanchez, opined that López Obrador breached “the forms” by making the letter public with his demands, but maintained that the relationship with the country is ” above “the Mexican president.
