Sinaloa: Campaign ‘Las Cabras sin basura’, seeks to reduce waste in beach areas

José Antonio Prado Zárate, municipal director of Ecology, said that it is a campaign that is being worked in conjunction with the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Tourism Fund (FONATUR), where more than 20 volunteers participate per day (Friday , Saturday and Sunday) of different educational institutions of the upper and upper secondary level.

“They are around 100 volunteers the three days, participate universities with the UTESC, UADEO, CBTIS, Conalep; this campaign is aimed at raising awareness and guidance so that families who come to vacation can take care of their garbage, “he said.

“We are supporting with a black plastic bag so that they can contain it and take it to the collection sites, this is a change referring to the past campaigns that have been applied during all the parties, where the volunteer teams came to pick up the garbage at people, this has changed radically, because they are people who are raising awareness, who are participating, “the official added.

He explained that last year (2018) more than 30 tons were collected on all the beach days, which he said, indicates a strong problem, so this year the goal is to lower that figure, through awareness by faith use of household goods, thus decreasing the impact on the beach.

For its part, Monserrat Cortés, support in the environmental education program of the UNAM-FONATUR agreement, said that this awareness campaign is working inviting beach players to participate leaving the beaches clean and separating the garbage.

He explained that there are seven containers located along the beach, where they are exclusively for PET, while the Municipal Government placed around 100 containers for all kinds of garbage, “we are also going through the garden, we leave a bag to people and we give them a message to keep the beaches clean and join the campaign, “he said.
