Yucatan absorbs more and more residents from other parts of Mexico

The number of out-of-staters living in Yucatan has risen 73.3 percent since 2000, according to a government survey.

The 210,833 “outsiders” living in Yucatan represents an 11.4 percent increase since 2014, the last time the National Survey of the Demographic Dynamics (Enadid) took a count.

According to the survey, in 1990 people born in other states and living in Yucatan totaled 74,617, equivalent to 5.6 percent of the total population.

Ten years later, in 2000, the figure rose to 113,140, ​​7 percent; in 2009 it reached 167,755, or 8.6 percent.

In 2014, Enadid registered 189,182 people who were born in other states and living in Yucatán, or 9 percent of the population.

In 2018, the survey found 210,833 people, equivalent to 9.6 percent of the 2.2 million people living in Yucatan.

In another study, the National Population Council (Conapo) finds that the majority of those same-country “expats” are from Mexico City, followed by Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz and Chiapas.

The flow of residents from Chiapas grew the most dramatically, at 140 percent from 2000 to 2014.

According to Conapo, 60 percent of people from other states who decide to live in Yucatan choose the capital city, Merida.

Fewer Yucatecans are also living abroad. According to Inegi, these totaled 5,605 people in 2014, compared with 3,611 in 2018.
