The excess of garbage, animals that are trapped and even feces, besides the chemicals in the products that are used to disinfect, affect the quality of the water that comes out of the faucets and showers.

The lack of interest in maintaining drinking water storage systems in the home, whether cisterns or water tanks, is a risk to health since the bacteria and viruses that develop in that environment can cause dermatological diseases, gastrointestinal and hepatitis, among others.

The excess of minerals, dust, branches, leaves, trash in general, small animals that get trapped and even bird feces, in addition to chemicals in the products used to disinfect, affect the quality of the water that comes out of the taps and the sprinklers

The doctor Arturo Peñaloza Hernández, said that in most of the equipment the closure is not hermetic to prevent the entry of microorganisms and even worse is when they are left without a lid.

“Failure to do that cleaning generates the proliferation of viruses like hepatitis A and rotavirus, some bacteria that cause skin diseases, E-Coli, salmonella and parasites that cause gastrointestinal infections,” he said.

The National Water Commission (Conagua) indicated that the places where water is taken, such as rivers, lakes, springs or wells, have 41 percent of the acceptable quality limit. However, there are other factors that affect the quality of the water that comes out of the shower or faucets.

The Ministry of Health through the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) recommends the cleaning of storage systems every six months.

Currently, the tanks have technologies or additives that help as filters that reduce the risk of external factors damaging the water in these containers.

Ernesto Rodriguez, expert in these storage systems, said that they have an antimicrobial coating that prevents reproduction of these microorganisms inside when a good hygiene, but external contaminants can not be controlled and that degrades water quality.

He mentioned that in the tank is more complicated contaminant control, since the covers are usually sheet and there is a seal, also are at ground, which causes the pisen and deformed.

For cleaning it is advisable to close the stopcock a few days before this action so that it is emptied and water is not wasted. You should leave some liquid to brush it with a broom dedicated solely for this purpose, to avoid adding garbage and then you must rinse and empty completely to fill it again.
