SCENES OF MODESTY AND LIGHTNESS: CHRONICLE OF THE VEDETTES IN THE MUSEO DEL ESTANQUILLO

Scenes of modesty and lightness is an exhibition with photos of the private Monsiváis collection about the Mexican stars of the 20th century. MXCity

The private Monsiváis collection shows the iconic women of the vedette culture.

In his book Escenas de pudor y liviandad, Carlos Monsiváis, tells us the scene of the Mexican vedettes of the twenties and thirties, the ups and downs of the mass of the image and the meeting point and enjoyment of the poor classes, hobby of collectors , satisfaction of voyeurs, distraction of instant aesthetes, spur of the fantasy of dressmakers and decorators.

In his text says: ” Photos of the vedettes in various sizes, sepia, colored, black and white . The most accessible, those of the size of a postcard, are a democratic opportunity, extension of facilities to a public without access to books and desirous of images that reignite hobbies and predilections . The photos, new trade of the twentieth century, are everything at once: memories of places, incitements to travel, bursts of morbid fascinations, anthropological testimonies that ignore such a condition, masturbatory supports, apogee of the soul in love. “

The homonymous exhibition to the book, Scenes of modesty and lightness, is about that, in fact: Pictures of the vedettes in various sizes, in sepia, colored, black and white … During the opening of the exhibition, the General Director of Heritage Historical, Artistic and Cultural Department of the local Ministry of Culture, Guadalupe Lozada León, celebrated that this exhibition “will remember an important time of the national show to relive the memories of our parents and grandparents.”

Enoch de Santiago, director of the Estanquillo Museum, highlighted the historical and educational work of the exhibition , which he considered as a new window to the Carlos Monsiváis collection and an interesting museum proposal to visit during this holiday period.

The curator and also a teacher in art history, Ana Catalina Valenzuela, described the exhibition as “a chronicle of the spectacle scene in Mexico”, in which the audience will remember Virginia Fabregas, Esperanza Iris, Mimi Derba, Maria Conesa, Lupe Rivas Cacho, María Teresa Montoya, Celia Montalván, Dolores del Río, Lupe Vélez and María Félix, of whom there are extended portraits, photographs, audios, videos and postcards.

The exhibition exhibits mostly the work of the Mexican writer’s collection, as well as unpublished audios of the National Music Library and cinematographic fragments of Televisa Radio in which the public will be able to see the participation of some divas in national and Hollywood productions.

Pável Granados, director of the National Music Library , shared that the public will be able to hear the voice of Esperanza Iris, María Félix, Lupe Vélez and María Teresa Montoya , among other divas, who were able to find interviews and artistic presentations.

In the exhibition, it was sought to portray the characters that the divas gave life , as well as their personal achievements, to observe them as enterprising women in an industry mainly of men , in which they created companies and productions, achieving international recognition. The opening of this exhibition is the first of the year, whose large format images have been exhibited in the National Auditorium and the gallery of the Tacuba Metro station, and which is now presented with a new curatorship.

The sample consists of 150 portraits, all belonging to the Carlos Monsiváis Collection, of authors and studies such as Fotoestudio Mak, Industrial Photographic Company, Juan Ocón, Gilberto Martínez Solares and Alex Phillips.

The biographies of the divas demonstrate their ability to venture into the theatrical and film companies, which had been in charge of male characters, and also to stand out beyond their appearance, both in Mexico and the United States.

Scenes of modesty and lightness ranges from the honey of Juan Gabriel to the enigmatic sensuality of the theater of magazines that also defined the lifestyle of the divas that appear portrayed in the photographs. Where unlike what we now conceive as eroticism , during the first half of the twentieth century one approached this type of spectacle to captivate with the beauty and skill of its protagonists. Probably that was what caught the attention of Monsiváis and some members of the political class, who spent sleepless nights for these actresses , such as Plutarco Elías Calles, Victoriano Huerta and Álvaro Obregón who attended the shows.

Website  //  Facebook  //  Twitter  //  InstagramTWO SCHOOLS OF THE CDMX THAT ARE CONSIDERED AS ARTISTIC MONUMENTS2 Schools of the CDMX are considered artistic monuments, as well as the Angel of Independence, the Palace of Fine Arts and the Old Postal Palace.MXCity

These Artistic Monuments have a lot of history and little-known murals.

The Special Program of Culture and Art was created with the aim of preserving, promoting and disseminating heritage and cultural diversity , as one of its strategies to strengthen regulatory actions and protect the legal of cultural heritage.

As a source of identity and community development, the nation’s artistic heritage must be preserved and increased by protecting the assets that constitute Mexico’s cultural wealth and that are part of a historical process in which society plays a fundamental role in the reaffirmation of cultural manifestations , when these have a value and meaning for it.

That is why the Emiliano Zapata Elementary School and the Centro Escolar Revoluciónobtained the declaration of Artistic Monuments, in accordance with the decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation.

The Federal Law on Monuments and Archaeological, Artistic and Historical Zones, artistic monuments are the goods that have relevant aesthetic value , taking into account their representativeness, insertion in a certain stylistic current , degree of innovation, materials and techniques used and other analogous ones and, in case of real estate, its meaning in the urban context. Some buildings that are considered artistic monuments are: the Angel’s Column of Independence, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Old Postal Palace, the Bank of Mexico.

The Centro Escolar Revolución was built on the same ground occupied by the Volunteer Recollection of San Miguel , then the School of Girls of San Miguel de Bethlem and, later, the missing building of the Belén Prison. On this site, Father Domingo Pérez Barcia, founded an asylum house in 1683: the Recollection of San Miguel de Bethlem for poor women, widows and single women , in the neighborhood of Bethlehem. It was closed in the nineteenth century by the Reform Laws in 1862, the building was given as payment to the City Council and became part of the General Department of Charity of the Ministry of Justice.

A new prison was built there to which the prisoners were transferred in January 1863. The building had a neoclassical facade , protected by 6 Ionic columns, with a maximum capacity for 600 inmates. In 1879 there were 2,000, including 300 women, and by 1890 there were 7,000 .

During the Porfiriato, in Belem there were famous prisoners like Jesús Negrete “El Tigre de Santa Julia”, who died in prison, and Jesús Arriaga “Chucho el Roto”, besides writers, journalists and politicians like Filomeno Mata, Heriberto Frías, Enrique and Ricardo Flores Magón. With the construction of the Penitentiary of Lecumberri, the prison of Belem with its sequel of plague, typhoid, lice and rats, was closed in 1933 , the same year in which the old building was completely demolished, in order to build one of the centers more modern schoolchildren of his time.

Centro Escolar Revolución was built between 1933 and 1934 by the architect Antonio Muñoz García ; who incorporated sports facilities and services that allow new activities for the psycho-pedagogical development of students. It has the murals of Raul Anguiano and Aurora Reyes, as well as stained glass by Fermín Revueltas.

As a complement, several painters from the League of Writers and Revolutionary Artists (LEAR) were invited to translate the revolutionary ideas into the walls and stained glass. Thus, Raúl Anguiano, Fermín Revueltas, Aurora Reyes, Gonzalo de la Paz, Ignacio Gómez Jaramillo,Antonio Gutiérrez and Everardo Ramírez, painted walls and designed beautiful stained glass windows.

It was during the government of General Lázaro Cárdenas, that the objectives set out to achieve their development by enabling it to be an advanced educational center , where students received a comprehensive education, which helped to change the ideology, customs and way of life , to create a new just and egalitarian society and to achieve it, it was equipped with the most modern facilities: gymnasium, swimming pool, athletic track, sports courts, library and workshops.

The Emiliano Zapata Elementary School, for its part, was built by the architect Juan O’Gorman between 1931 and 1934, which is a notable example of a functional building; a style that shows technical principles that respond to physiological, ergonomic, psychological and social needs , in a simple and effective way, using technology and constructive materials and, excluding any concept of aesthetic or ornamental complexity.

This work presents a high degree of innovation , since technical resources were optimized that resolved the needs of spaces, hygiene and maintenance . The finishes are conceived by the predominant materials, such as reinforced concrete, 14-cm thick partition walls , concealed electrical installation, and asphalt doors and floors in the classrooms; what makes it an unusual construction according to the time it was built.

In this school, Juan O’Gorman promoted the integrated realization of mural painting , entrusting it to artists of the Mexican school of the thirties. In this school is a fresco mural by the painter Pablo O’Higgins, which highlights the political message of the time: “Life and social problems”, “The conquest against the truth” and “The reality of work and their struggles.”

On this occasion the National Cineteca brings some essential films to understand the cinema of our era.

As every year, the National Cineteca announces its international show which has become a tradition for the thousands of attendees who will see some representatives of the best films from around the world . The 66th International Film Festival will feature 14 films from countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, France, the extinct Soviet Union and Mexico. There is no better way to enjoy holidays than to enjoy contemporary cinema.

The 66th edition presents films that have only been presented at festivals and have not had a premiere in form, so this is an excellent opportunity to get ahead of its premiere, and enjoy 14 films, highlighting two Mexican films.

With 48 years of history, the International Exhibition is the oldest event in the area. The first edition was held in 1971 and began with only one edition per year ; however, the team realized that it was quite difficult for the audience to see all the films – one daily – since they were around 23. Therefore, they made the decision that there would be two Samples a year: the spring and the one of autumn .

The advantages of having two Samples a year is that it is easier to rotate them in the city and its surroundings, as well as in the headquarters of other states, because they are films that can hardly reach the rest of the country.

Today the show has expanded and each film is six days at the Cineteca, to then be presented at other venues in the Metropolitan area, in addition to reaching several states of the country and several of them are premiered on the billboard of the Cineteca and some commercial rooms.

In recent years it has received on average 80 thousand spectators throughout the country , half of them are in Mexico City. The show that has gathered more people was the spring in 2014, when it reached 120,000 attendees in its different venues ; when they showed films like Nymphomania, The great hotel Budapest and Tom in the barn.

The inaugural film of the show will be La Mamarista by director Lila Avilés, winner of the last Morelia International Film Festival , in which we follow Eve, a young hotel worker in a luxury hotel in Mexico City. They will never get old is a documentary directed by Peter Jackson already known for his work in the Lord of the rings , which seeks to pay tribute to the British soldiers who participated in the First World War , a raw film that reflects the horror that was experienced in that era.

Eight out of ten is another Mexican film directed by Sergio Umanshy Brener, which tells the story of Aurelio and Citlati, who will transform their search for justice into revenge. Among the must-see is The House by the Sea , by French director Robert Guédiguian, which tells the story of Angéle, Joseph and Armand, who return to their father’s house after suffering a heart attack; In war , a film that shows a current problem: the struggle of the people who are denied a job and a decent salary.

As in other years, the 66th edition of the Exhibition will have two circuits within Mexico City ; The circuit 1 comprises branches as Cinépolis Diana, Cinépolis VIP Plaza Carso, Cinépolis VIP Samara , Cinematógrafo Poplar , July room Baracho, FES Acatlan CCU Tlatelolco, FES Aragon, IPN IPN Zacatenco and Medicine.

Circuit 2 includes venues such as Cinemex Reforma , Cinemex Pavilion Polanco, Cinemex Duraznos, Cinemex Altavista, Cinemex Insurgentes, IFAL, Tonala Cinema, The House of Cinema , Mexican Culture Seminar and Faculty of Arts and Design. Another day with life , directed by Raúl de la Fuente and Damian Nenow, and based on the book of the same name by Ryszard Kapuściński; of the house by the sea and wedding , the exhibition was negotiated directly by the Cineteca Nacional. There is also Maria por Callas, In war, Plaza París, Leto, Atardecer, Angelo, Asako I & II: Dreaming or waking up, They will never get old and come and see.

Website  //  Facebook  //  Twitter  //  InstagramTHE IMPOSING VOLCANOES OF DR. ATL IN THE MUNALThe cosmic and mystical vision of Gerardo Murillo Dr. Atl (1875-1964) has been compiled in the exhibition ATL, earth, wind and fire; sublime sensation, in the MUNAL.MXCity

Gerardo Murillo Coronado was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on October 3, 1875. In addition to being a painter and writer, the Mexican also ventured into areas such as geology, exploration and politics . He decided to adopt the pseudonym of Dr. Atl , since he was a doctor of philosophy and was amazed by the words in Nahuatl. Atl means “water”, and he said that he had been baptized with “the wonderful water of his joy to live”.

As a young man, he was in countries such as England, Germany, France, Spain and Italy . In these European places he developed journalism and painting works. Upon returning to Mexico he found a special fascination for its beautiful landscapes, especially volcanic ones . This is how he also entered the world of science.

The first work he did around Popocatépetl was a literary one. Later he began to make drawings and paintings of nature , which he based on his studies on the origin of Pedregal de San Ángel and the gold zone in Oaxaca.

His passion for volcanoes was translated into exploration trips by Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. In 1943, he witnessed the birth of Paricutín , the youngest volcano on the American continent. From that shocking moment, he left Mexico City to move to the foothills of the incipient Michoacan volcano, with the aim of learning about it and, of course, translating it into his art .

Undoubtedly Dr. Atl is one of the most suggestive and original artists that Mexico has given, since he is not only a painter, but also an explorer scientist who was face to face with all the formations of nature that he painted with his brave talent.

The exhibition of Dr Atl in the Munal began on April 11 and will be until July 2. It is conformed by approximately 130 pieces between pictures, photographic and printed reproductions ; 104 pieces are property of the museum collection, five are from private collections and one from the Watercolor Museum.

“ATL, earth, wind and fire; sublime sensation “ , seeks to bring citizens closer to the work of one of the most important Mexican painters. It is divided into four thematic axes, starting with the representations of the Paricutín volcano painted so much by Dr. Atl , from its birth and its eruption. Then he continues with the landscape phase of the painter, because among his tastes was geology and volcanology.

The exhibition focuses on Dr. Atl , but to complement the landscape section there are also works by José María Velasco, Carlos Rivera, Francisco Goitia, among others , that span from 1870 to 2016. As part of the exhibition, the Munal It has academic activities, as well as a space where children will learn what it is like to climb a volcano. So go to the expo of Dr. Atl in the Munal and know the work this painter.
