The 3 sectors with the best salaries in Mexico

The salary perception for specialized profiles in these areas can exceed 200,000 pesos per month

In Mexico, the first motivation to change jobs is salary. 53% of Mexicans say they are dissatisfied with what they earn, while 68% acknowledge that getting a better remuneration is their incentive to seek a new job opportunity, according to the ‘Informe Trabajoral México 2019’, carried out by Hays based on in interviews with 4,500 employees and employers.

“In 2018 the lack of talent with skills required by highly specialized sectors such as technology, engineering, automotive was accentuated. To solve the problem we must reassess the education plans and strengthen the actions in the companies to retain, “says Axel Dono, country manager of Hays Mexico.

According to the report, 42% of employees recognize that their companies do not have talent retention policies. However, the lack of a plan to support a person does not mean that high wages are discarded in certain industries.

There are profiles that, due to their level of specialization and their difficulty in finding them, are being well paid, says Axel Dono.

What are those profiles and in what sectors? Below is a sample of the best paid according to the monthly base salary. The list is the result of the analysis that Hays made from interviewing 8,600 managers and directors between January and December of 2018.

1. Financial services

In order to obtain a better remuneration in this sector, the recommendation of the human capital firm focuses on training in technological issues due to the evolution of services and banks towards the fintech scheme. It is difficult to find talent with that vision, in addition to the command of other languages.

The financial services that best remunerate are banking, brand finance, investment banking and private equity services . The director of finance in these areas receives a salary between 140,000 and 200,000 pesos, in addition to variable annual bonuses.

A legal director receives an average of 150,000, while those in charge of the compliance office (ethics issues) have monthly salaries that range between 85,000 and 120,000, plus annual bonuses of 20% to 30%, equivalent to their compensation. The “minor” compensation in these cases is the figure of corporate lawyer, with perceptions between 55,000 and 70,000 pesos.

2. Pharmaceutical industry

According to data from the National Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry, in 2018 this market is positioned as the second in Latin America, because it generates a direct impact on 161 branches of economic activity. In Mexico, this sector generates more than 75,000 direct jobs. The arrival of investment by highly specialized laboratories increased during the past year and caused a greater demand for specialized depositions.

For José María Perulles, Managing Director of Human Resources Aspen Pharmacare Latin America, companies have seen the need to improve their salary packages, making them more attractive to increase the possibility of attracting and retaining the scarce specialized talent available in this industry.

Among the profiles with better salary perception is the country manager in laboratories, with an approximate of 280,000 pesos (hereafter) per month and annual bonuses of 20% to 30% corresponding to his compensation. The salary for commercial director appears in second place with 170,000 pesos monthly, while the manager of the business unit receives between 150,000 and 200,000 pesos. The national sales manager between 90,000 and 110,000. In this industry, the most demanded positions in 2018 went to the regulatory affairs manager and the marketing manager.

3. Automotive and auto parts

Both industries accounted for 2.9% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Mexico and 18.3% of manufacturing GDP during the first quarter of 2018, according to Inegi data. According to data published in the Hays report, it is in the north of the country and Mexico City where the highest salaries in engineering and manufacturing are concentrated. “They can be up to 25% higher than in other regions,” said Axel Dono. This situation causes a concentration of specialized talent in these areas, but in 2019 an exponential growth of the manufacturing presence is seen in San Luis Potosi, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Puebla, Queretaro and, therefore, the need to attract talent in those regions. .

A director of operations, concentrated in companies focused on packaging, receives between 140,000 and 180,000 monthly, while the plant manager ranges from 120,000 to 150,000 monthly. It is followed in the line of important perceptions by the operations manager with 90,000 to 110,000 pesos and the manager of quality assurance perceiving between 60,000 and 80,000 pesos per month.

Another profile with important demand is the Manager of Maintenance and Reliability, which focuses on the proper functioning of equipment in industrial plants. It is an increasingly strategic position in companies, since they also manage energy efficiencies.
