Cancun Airport, alternative to the AICM

Cancun, QR. Before the saturation of the International Airport of Mexico City (AICM), the air terminal in Cancun is becoming a reception area for flights from the interior of the country.

Currently, the International Airport of Cancun receives more than 30 flights from the same number of cities in the main states of the Mexican Republic, which makes it the second air terminal, after the one in Mexico City, with the largest number of connections. direct from the interior of the country, said Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo (CPTQ).

Airlines need to move their airplanes, but since they can no longer place new routes from the capital of the country, they are opting to open direct flights from the main cities of Mexico to Cancun, which is the most demanded destination nationwide, he explained.

One of the most recent examples of this trend is the opening of two direct flights from VivaAerobús from Hermosillo and Tijuana to Cancún, which will start operating from June 1 and 8, respectively.

Flota Ocampo informed that the CPTQ itself is about to announce two new frequencies from Monterrey and Guadalajara, as part of this inertia motivated by the saturation of the AICM.

This trend also favors the terminals of Cozumel and Chetumal, the latter with a recent flight from Guadalajara, operated by Volaris, with a frequency from Monday to Saturday, he added.

In the case of Cozumel, he said that soon new flights will be announced, although even in recent days one was inaugurated from Mexico City, operated by Volaris.

Hub

Darío Flota said that before the saturation of the airport in Mexico City, airlines are seeing the air terminal in Cancun, not only as a receiver of flights from the interior of the Republic, but as a hub distributor to the Caribbean and Central region and South America.

He recalled that, in November of last year, the American Airlines company announced that Cancun became its new connection center to the Caribbean, especially because the airline already flies to this region from Dallas, Charlotte, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, New York-JFK, Phoenix, Boston, Kansas City, Nashville and Raleigh / Durham.

The director of the CPTQ said that between 2018 and 2019, the Mexican Caribbean has launched more than 30 new flights and international air routes from the United States, Germany, Russia and Colombia, as well as new frequencies of domestic routes.

Among the open routes are three domestic flights from Aguascalientes, Chihuahua and Torreón, as well as international flights from Vancouver, Baltimore, Chicago, Düsseldorf, Nashville, Orlando, St. Louis, Detroit, Kansas City, Newark, Indianapolis, Salvador, San Francisco, Columbus, Munich, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Memphis, Austin, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, and soon two new ones from Moscow.
