“Pathetic” Mexico stand at the world’s largest tourism fair

The professionals and Mexican tourist leaders displaced to Berlin on the occasion of the biggest world tourism fair, the ITB, described as “pathetic” the first stand that presented the country in a great fair without the support of the closed Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico (CPTM) ), by decision of the secretary of tourism, Miguel Torruco.

The stand of Mexico, unlike all the previous years in all the major world fairs, was located on the same floor of the fair and had only two offices on which five boxes made a bridge with five photos of the country, when the tourist space of Mexico, in the past, came to win prizes for its splendor, which was translated into affluence.

In this ITB the aspect was bleak and the leaders consulted by REPORTUR.mx regretted that so many years of work to position Mexico with an image that conveyed being a ‘world top’ destination had to be stained in this way by an improper space of a world tourism power ( Fitur will be the last event to coordinate the CPTM before closing ).

For some of those consulted by REPORTUR.mx the stand of Mexico was by far the worst aesthetically of all the great world destinations, even that of the poorest countries of the world like the Africans, and all with the aggravating circumstance that precisely country lives its worst moments touristically in a long time.

The decision to close the CPTM by the head of the SECTUR, Miguel Torruco, who inaugurated the stand of Mexico before the vacuum of the great leaders of the industry, is now reflected its effects with the image that the country is giving of low professionalism before the eyes of the big tourist sellers around the world.

Also, the SECTUR stopped organizing in the embassy the traditional post-fair reception that served to present the destinations to the main tourist buyers from all over the world ( CPTM: dismissed 19 of the 22 directors of foreign offices ).

At the start of the 53rd edition of the ITB Tourist Fair in Berlin, which brings together 10 thousand companies linked to the sector and representatives of 180 countries, Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo (CPTQ), highlighted the lack of an “umbrella brand” and a logo of Mexico that agglutinate the destinations of the country.

Interviewed for the morning news of Radio Fórmula, he said that the subject already addressed it in a meeting with Tourism Secretary, Miguel Torruco Marqués, who is in Berlin, in which the future of tourist fairs was discussed. There is a thank you with Quintana Roo for leading the presence of Mexico in Colombia and Berlin and we agreed to review the list of events that are here by the end of the year.

However, the SECTUR only has interest in four or five throughout the year and we have about 20 in our calendar, he added. We will define the way Mexico will be present and, very likely, with the coordination of Quintana Roo, given the number of exhibitors participating in each of the fairs, he stressed, according to encambioqroo.

The 14 representatives of Quintana Roo and some of other destinations in Mexico occupy the third of the pavilion in which we are, about 50 square meters, he continued. There are other stands of Mexican destinations distributed in different sectors of the fair, whose participation was coordinated by the CPTM office in Germany, one of the three that continue to operate.

After remembering that the presence of Quintana Roo at the ITB fair was financed with the participation of each of the 14 companies present, coordinated by the CPTQ, he recalled that the event will conclude next Sunday. Finally, he said that Germany’s solid economy makes it one of the most sought after markets. In fact, in extension, the ITB is larger than Fitur’s.

The Federal Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marqués led the ribbon cutting of the ITB Tourism Fair in Berlin, an event that was attended by the State Parliamentary Secretary, Federal Ministry of Economy and Tourism of Germany, Thomas Barei and the Ambassador of Mexico in Germany, Rogelio Granguillhome

Present at the event, the Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, Marisol Vanegas Perez said that “before the disappearance of the Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico we are very committed to the sector. The governor, Carlos Joaquín, has asked us to work hard to maintain the competitiveness and presence of our 11 destinations.

“At ITB Berlin we will have meetings with businessmen to promote new trade agreements and a longer stay for our European visitors, which in turn will allow us to generate more and better opportunities for our population,” he added.

According to the Quintana Roo official, passenger flow reports at the Cancun airport in February show an increase of 4.7 percent in domestic passengers and 1.2 percent in international passengers, positive figures issued by the Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste and reported to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) that will generate certainty in the industry, “because we continue to grow.”

According to a statement from the Quintana Roo government, during the first day of activities at the ITB Berlin, the Mexican Caribbean delegation learned about market trends, as well as the challenges in terms of technology and sustainability issues, as Galu points out.

Darío Flota Ocampo, explained that the German market is the eighth most important for the Mexican Caribbean in terms of arrival of foreign tourists. In 2018, the destinations of the Mexican Caribbean reported almost 150 thousand visitors and, for the seventh consecutive year, registered a continuous growth. ¨We expect for 2019 that the German market continues to grow. Germany is the most powerful economy in the European Union and one of the most coveted markets in the world, “said Ocampo Fleet.
