On the approval of government measures, the best evaluation was to remove the pension to the former presidents; while the most failing was the definitive cancellation of the airport in Texcoco.

A few days after serving three months of government, the approval of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador increased, and although the citizens applauded that the pension will be removed from the former presidents, the most failing measure was the definitive cancellation of the New Mexico International Airport (NAIM), which was to be built in Texcoco.

According to a survey of Consulta Mitofsky, the level of acceptance of the president among citizens rose 4.5%, from November 2018 to February 2019, to 67.1%, despite the controversies that accompanied his decisions and that shook the markets and the business sector.

Regarding the approval of government measures, the best evaluation is to remove the pension to the former presidents, approved by 80.7% of the respondents; while the most failing, with 29.6% approval and 49.5% rejection, was the definitive cancellation of the NAIM.

“In general, all measures achieve a majority approval except for the cancellation of the Texcoco airport and firing government employees (41.6%),” says Mitofsky’s report.

Of the last presidents, only Ernesto Zedillo managed to increase his approval at the start of his government, and from December 1994 to February 1995 he went from 32.3% to 42%, although months later he suffered a sharp decline in popularity; the 67% obtained by AMLO is below the 70% obtained by Vicente Fox in the second month of 2001.

Although Mitofsky emphasizes that the moments are different “since today it is more complicated for an agent to stay well evaluated with the social networks active in the political polarization”.

The survey “Andrés Manuel López Obrador. First quarter of government “also points out that there was an increase in the perception that the country’s security, economy and political situation improved. For example, in February 2017, 16% considered that security in Mexico improved, a figure that by February 2019 amounted to 36 percent. In the economic question, in the same periods it went from 18 to 46%.
