Government of AMLO announces free vacation trips for low-income Mexicans

The Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) announced the program ‘Smiles for Mexico’ which seeks to promote social tourism through free travel for low-income Mexicans.

Miguel Torruco Marqués, head of the Sectur, said that “tourism will be a right for all,” so Mexican citizens of limited resources and vulnerable people will be invited to travel for free throughout the country, “as part of their universal right, the right to recreation and rest. ”

In this press conference, which took place last weekend from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Andrés Manuel López Obrador was present. The president announced the National Tourism Strategy 2019-2024.

Another program that seeks to detonate the tourist offer is ‘Disfruta México’. The AMLO government will seek to establish agreements with tourism tour operatorsthroughout the country; all with the objective of offering packages at affordable prices.

Both programs (Sonrisas por México and Disfruta México) will start with a pilot testto evaluate the results.

Mr. Torruco said that his tourism strategy will follow the same pattern outlined by the message of AMLO: avoid duplication, rationalize resources and apply austerity measures.

He also said that the new tourism model will be developed with adherence to six precepts: that it be fair, transparent, balanced, responsible, distributive and exemplary.
