Bringing broadband services to places that need it most at a lower cost is the goal of Viasat and plans to do it with five satellites, three of which are being built, and the collaboration of Facebook.

“We are building two satellites. The first will have coverage on the American continent and the second on Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In addition, we already signed with Boeing to build the third satellite that will have coverage in Asia, “said Kevin Cohen, spokesman for Viasat.

The telecommunications company has developed satellite technology for more than 30 years and currently has two main satellites in space. The second one covers Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

As part of the collaboration, Viasat will implement access points (hotspots) to high-speed satellite Wi-Fi – offered as a prepaid service – in thousands of rural locations. Facebook, for its part, will invest in its implementation to identify the optimal locations to offer the service.

“Currently we reach 1 million Mexicans, in communities of all states, 150,000 people connected per month,” said Cohen.

By the end of this year, Viasat’s goal is to connect 1 million Mexicans per month.

According to the Study on the Habits of Internet Users in Mexico, the main barrier to Internet access continues to be the speed of navigation.

“The perception of poor service is present in the segment of more than 34 years, on the other hand the segment of 17 years or less states that its main barrier is that they allow the use of the tool,” says the study.

Accessible Internet

Mexicans living in rural areas who have access to Viasat technology can find packages of 10 pesos per hour.

“People can do whatever they want with their internet and their time,” said Kevin Cohen, spokesman for Viasat.

“Currently we reach 1 million Mexicans, in communities of all states, 150,000 people connected per month,” said Cohen.

The company serves more than 1,000 commercial and private aircraft and also recently made a deal with Aeromexico.
