Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) analyze the possibility of carrying out a second drilling in the area where the Chicxulub crater is located (off the coast of Yucatan, Mexico), in order to obtain more information about the meteorite that fell there 65 million years ago and that allegedly extinguished 70 percent of living beings on Earth.

In this regard, Jaime Urrutia Fucuguachi, researcher of the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM, confirmed that there is a wide possibility of a second expedition, although for the moment it is unknown when it would be carried out, since the analyzes of the first excavations, which started between April and May 2016, have not yet concluded..

In 2016 Urrutia Fucuguachi commanded the team of national and foreign researchers who participated in the so-called “Chicxulub Crater 364 Expedition” that was carried out between April and May of that year, aboard the Myrtle ship / platform, located 30 kilometers from the coast of Sisal, in the Yucatan Peninsula.

During the expedition, the drilling reached a thousand 335 meters below the seabed and 303 samples were recovered and collected from the nuclei of the Crater.

According to the results of this first expedition it was possible to conclude that the impact took place 65 million years ago and pushed rocks that at that time were 10 kilometers below the surface.
