The fight against the theft of fuel in Mexico, called huachicol , has triggered the popularity of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador up to 86% approval, according to
a survey published Thursday by the newspaper ‘El Financiero’ .
According to the newspaper, López Obrador had a 70% approval at the end of December, when he began his campaign against the theft of gasoline and increased to 76% by mid-January and to 8% in early February.
The fight against the huachicol , as the illegal taking of hydrocarbons is called, has the approval of 80% of the respondents, while only 12% have a bad or very bad opinion.
López Obrador, who took office on December 1, began a frontal fight against the theft of hydrocarbons that the state company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) suffered for years, an offense that generates millions in losses for the company.
To put an end to this problem, it reinforced the surveillance of oil pipelines deploying thousands of security agents and changed the method of transporting gasoline to one that involves the use of pipes (tankers).
These measures caused a gasoline shortage crisis in ten states in January, with closed service stations and panic purchases.

Likewise, 65% of the respondents positively considered the decision to sell the Government’s armored vehicles, a measure that 12% of Mexicans consider bad.
The position of Lopez Obrador towards the crisis in Venezuela, which is based on the non-intervention and recognition of President Nicolás Maduro, is the policy with the least approval, although it reaches 54% acceptance against 17% rejection.
López Obrador swept the elections on July 1, 2018 with 30 million votes, 53%, becoming the most voted president in the history of Mexico and the first leftist president in decades.
