Besides acting as one of the hidden treasures of the capital, its unexpected presence has contributed to significantly improve the quality of life in the city.

Regulation of humidity and temperature of the environment, filtration of large amounts of Co2 and contaminants, thermal insulators and own food generators are just some of the qualities you get by planting a  green roof in your home.

The green roofs have gone from being an aesthetic adornment to a total green revolution that is always committed to the quality of life of urbanity. Today they have become one of the most important tools in the sustainability of large cities – we recall briefly the benefits that sustainable architecture projects such as the Dr. Manuel Gea González Public Hospital or the Vasconcelos Library have granted.

In Mexico there is also a growing and timely effervescence for green roofs. Suffice it to say that the largest green roof in Latin America is concentrated in Mexico City .

On the central building of the INFONAVIT National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute , located in the Guadalupe Inn neighborhood, a peculiar green lung was built. It is certainly a secret that not many know; a space dedicated to harmony and, among other things, to significantly improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the capital.

With an area of 2,270 square meters of area and more than 125 different species of vegetation, this ecological ceiling was designed for the three types of ecosystems that occur simultaneously in Mexico City: high forests, desert and tropical areas , and for the latter, a mirror of water with fish was fixed.

Its rainwater pond has a capacity of 1,000 liters, in addition to showing its surroundings spaces designed for contemplation , exercise areas, greenhouses and even a semi-Olympic running track. To maintain optimum moisture conditions, a water tank was built , and it also has a sprinkler and drip irrigation system, which moistens the plants in hot seasons.

Besides acting as one of the hidden treasures of the capital, its unexpected presence has decreased between 10 and 15% the temperature of this large building, thus contributing to its energy savings.

Today, the most recognized green roof in Latin America is open to the public and receives excursions for students, groups of people and anyone who travel around its beautiful places for free.
