Mazatlan, Sinaloa.- The 2019 commercial tuna fishing season starts on January 19 and ends on November 9 in the Pacific Ocean.

The captain of Puerto de Mazatlan, José Enrique Mora Reyes detailed, that the fleet of 32 ships are ready to leave on Friday and wait for the opening of the harvest on the high seas.
Even said, since last Saturday the tuna vessels are already out to perform machine tests.
“On Friday 18 the Conapesca will indicate the exit and that same day, they will be authorized the dispatches so that they leave and they are in the hour and date in which the opening of the commercial fishing of tunics is established”, expressed.
According to international organizations such as the Organization in the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), tuna fishing in Mexico is one of the most selective and sustainable, since the technology of capture used allows the species to be a product of high nutritional quality and high nutritional value.
In addition, fishing is one of the main productive activities in Mexico, because it has an important contribution to the national food sector, as well as the jobs and foreign currency it generates.
It is estimated that there are more than 12,000 fishermen who will initiate the capture of tuna in the Mexican territorial sea of the Pacific Ocean and foreign jurisdictional waters that are in the area of regulation of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission.
The fishing of tuna has great relevance for our country for its contribution to the food sector and the regional economy, since this activity generates around 72 thousand jobs, including direct and indirect and catches of more than 100 thousand tons of products with high nutritional value year.
Fact: Mexico’s tuna fleet is composed of 63 tall ships of which 32 are in Mazatlan, which makes it the largest fleet in Latin America to capture this species.
It should be noted that due to its volume and value, the tuna fishery is positioned in second place in the fishing production in Mexico, and it is also one of the most sustainable, a feature that has been recognized by FAO.
It should be noted that in Mexico, tuna fishing is regulated by NOM-001-SAG / PESC-2013, which establishes the specifications for fishing operations of the species with purse seines, as well as the establishment of fishing periods. ban for the different species of tunas of the Pacific Ocean, which have as objective to protect their periods of reproduction and biological development, which allows to guarantee sufficient availability and give continuity to the extractive phases, in benefits of the Mexican fishermen.
In July 2018, a fixed temporary date was established until 2021, the opening on January 19 and the end of the season on November 9.
