Hundreds of Honduran migrants who march in a caravan to the United States managed to cross over to Guatemala this Tuesday after breaking the police fence on the border.
After passing the barrier of about 150 Honduran policemen who blocked their way, the migrants jumped for joy and shouted “Fuera JOH” in reference to the initials of the Honduran president, Juan Orlando Hernández.
The migrants had to present before the immigration authorities their identity document to cross the border, but they ignored that requirement.
Around a thousand members of the caravan that began to leave from Monday night in San Pedro Sula, 180 km north of Tegucigalpa, entered Guatemalan territory, but it was not clear if the local authorities would allow them to continue on their way.
When crossing the border they found a cordon of Guatemalan policemen with whom they spoke to let them pass.
The new caravan was cited Monday by US President Donald Trump as proof of the need to build a wall on the border with Mexico to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants.
This is the third caravan that leaves from Honduras since last October 13 the first group of San Pedro Sula departed, followed by another four days later.
According to the Honduran Embassy in Mexico, some 2,500 Hondurans of these two caravans are in shelters in Mexico and only 3% are likely to achieve asylum in theUnited States.
The Foreign Ministry estimates that around 13,000 Hondurans arrived in Mexico in recent months, of which 7,270 have voluntarily returned to their country when they found their way blocked on the border with the United States, while 11 died.
