THE IMF SILENCES COPARMEX: THE AMLO STRATEGY IS THE RIGHT ONE

The International Monetary Fund, one of the most neoliberal international financial institutions in the world and often critical of leftist governments, indicated that the fight being fought by Andrés Manuel López Obrador against fuel theft in Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) is the right one

In a forum held at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), the director of the Department of the Western Hemisphere of the IMF, Alejandro Werner, said that the struggle undertaken by the government of Mexico is indicated:

Clearly the objective of going against the theft of fuel, we believe that it is obviously the right one; To do it with force and in a very determined way is very important. It is a matter of corruption, of the rule of law, of generating the right incentives for both public and private investment.

He stressed that this fight is a very important issue to improve the finances of Pemex and public finances themselves.

On the complaints that certain economic sectors are making, in the sense that the strategy can generate “chaos” and “affect” the economy of the country, the IMF official indicated:

Clearly, a measure of success, such as the one that is being implemented to reduce and eliminate fuel theft, is very important from the point of view of Pemex, and it is very important to send a clear signal of respect and strengthening of the state of right […] Obviously in its implementation can cause problems in several days, but corrected will not have a negative impact on the economic part.

This vision contrasts with that of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex), which has stated, in alarmist tone, that the losses due to the shortage due to the fight against the theft of gasoline amount to 2 thousand 250 million pesos.

This was stated by the leader of this confederation, Gustavo de Hoyos, who said that these figures were arrived at by “surveys” of their union members.

Gustavo de Hoyos, director of the Coparmex.

In a tone of supposed support, he indicated that they “supported” the fight, but not with the strategy being followed by the Mexican government, and even claimed that he prefers to have fuel although, although there is corruption: ” if there is shortage and it is growing, we demand that it be put citizens and businesses ahead and not ideological prejudices.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted the IMF statement, and said of it:

“I did know that the IMF said that with this measure the Mexican economy would be strengthened, Pemex would be strengthened; I consider that logical, because whatever we do to combat the corruption that is the main problem in Mexico, strengthens the national economy, and strengthens the economy of Mexicans and the government distributes the budget with equity and justice. “
