Agents will monitor 370 crossing points to avoid ‘undocumented’ access, said Segob; In addition, more immigration agents will be sent to the 12 formal crossings.

MEXICO CITY.- The Government of Mexico announced on Tuesday that it will send agents to some 370 crossing points on the border with Guatemala. The crossings “will be monitored and controlled to avoid the undocumented access of people to our territory,” said the secretary of the Interior, Olga Sánchez Cordero, without offering a date for the deployment.

Currently, many migrants can go from Guatemala to Mexico simply by crossing the Usumacinta and Suchiate rivers.

Sánchez Cordero also promised to send immigration agents to the 12 formal crossing points on that border.

He assured that Mexico will not allow a repeat of what happened in October, when caravans of Central American migrants clashed with Mexican police on the main border bridge and finally entered the country crossing the river.

“These caravans actually arrived in our country in October of this year. However, we also already know that a new caravan is being formed to enter our country in mid-January, “said the official.

“We are already taking the necessary measures for the safe and orderly entry of this caravan … There are leaders in this caravan who are managing it and trying to slam it here in our country, but they will not be allowed to be ordered to enter,” he added.

He also stated that it must be “safe, controlled and regulated by Mexican laws.”

The head of the Segob promised that migrants who present identity documents and request transit, humanitarian or refugee visas will receive a response within three days.
