Meet Arturo Zaldívar, the allied minister of the LGBT + community who is now president of the SCJN.
With more than nine years of experience, the Queretano and graduated from the Escuela Libre de Derecho, Minister Arturo Zaldívar was elected as president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) and the Council of the Federal Judiciary (CJF) for the period 2019-2022. He also holds a PhD in Law from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and has stood out as a great ally of the LGBT + community.
Zaldívar can be counted as one of the most progressive ministers the court has ever had, even though he was nominated by Felipe Calderón himself in 2009 to take the place of the then Supreme Court president, Genaro David Góngora Pimentel. In 2015, Arturo Zaldívar proposed legalizing cultivation, transportation and consumption of marijuana for recreational or recreational purposes, as he said that its prohibition goes against the free development of personality.
Also, in 2016, he filed an amparo bill in which he proposed declaring the “crime” of abortion unconstitutional.
#MatrimonioIgualitario la Constitución protege todo tipo de familia y prohíbe discriminar por motivo de orientación sexual. @SCJN primera Corte en América en declarar inconstitucional limitar el matrimonio a unión de hombre y mujer.
Why is Arturo Zaldívar an ally of the LGBT + community?
Regarding the Human Rights of the LGBT + community, he has defended that the Constitution protects all types of families and prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Similarly, it has been postulated in favor of adoption by same-sex couples, ensuring that it ensures the best interests of the child.
In October 2018, she supported the project of Minister Norma Lucía Piña Hernández , who proposed sheltering a transgender woman from Veracruz who was denied a birth certificate with her new identity, a resolution that will benefit transgender people who demand Your change of legal identity in the rest of the country.
Notably around the issue of hate speech, in one of his columns in 2017 in Milenio he wrote:
Undoubtedly, Minister Zaldívar will be a great counterweight to Congress and the Presidency on issues that concern everyone about the fight against corruption and the austerity strategies that have been part of his platform for a long time. And it will be a great complement to the progressive approach of the Fourth Transformation, without losing the independence that the separation of powers requires.
Congratulations, Minister-President.
