The filmmaker said he wants the animated series to be like ‘The Lord of the Rings’, but in the Mexican style.

Mexican filmmaker Jorge R. Gutierrez, who directed the animated film The Book of Life (2014), will be the director of the limited animation series Maya and the Three, which Netflix will produce, the digital platform said in a statement. Gutiérrez will be responsible for writing and directing this series inspired by the mythological world of Mesoamerica and in which a warrior princess must recruit three legendary fighters to save the world from humans and gods. In the creation of Maya and the Three, whose premiere is scheduled for 2021, the screenwriter Silvia Cárdenas Olivas ( Elena of Avalor ) and the animator Jeff Ranjo ( Moana, 2016) will also participate.

In declarations to Variety, Gutiérrez indicated today that he wants that this series is “as a ‘The Lord of the rings’ Mexican, but hilarious”. Also, the director underscored the value of Maya and the Three having a woman as a protagonist. “I realized that a lot of the mythology is sexist … This is my attempt to offer a great heroine and put her on this incredible adventure,” he added. Gutiérrez directed The Book of Life, a film that was produced by his compatriot Guillermo del Toro and that revolved around the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead. With a budget of 50 million dollars, The Book of Life raised 100 million worldwide, according to the data from the specialized portal Box Office Mojo.

In addition to Maya and the Three, Netflix announced five more animation projects: the Go! Series. Go! Cory Carson, Kid Cosmic and Tras Truck, and the films The Willoughbys and My Father’s Dragon.
