A daily dose of marijuana would reverse brain deterioration in old age

With age, it is possible and normal to forget things; this could change very soon. According to a study from the University of Bonn in Germany, a daily dose of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana could strengthen brain connections and reverse cognitive decline over the years.

In the study published in Nature Medicine, we read that THC could reverse brain aging and recover learning and memorization abilities in just four weeks. The substance mimics the molecule in our body important for those abilities.

The recent finding contrasts with previous studies that indicate that marijuana THC consumption impairs cognitive function in young people and adults. However, little was known about its effects on the elderly. What led Zimmer and his colleagues to experiment with an old mouse. The dose was not enough to cause psychoactive effects.

After four weeks, the mouse could complete tests like leaving a labyrinth or recognizing other mice. In fact, old mice that were given THC had similar results to young mice that do not receive THC.

According to the study, the result is that having more active THC receptors increases the connections between the brain and the hippocampus, which improves memory. This discovery opens new possibilities for the treatment of dementia.

Human tests are now planned with purified THC, instead of marijuana.
