According to the monitoring carried out by Semarnat, in some beaches of the country, there is a greater number of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and earthworms that can harm health.

Are you on the beach or will you visit one of these vacations? Some of them have a degree of pollution close to the limit that the authorities have established to indicate that they are suitable for submerging.

According to the measurement of the quality of the sea water made by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), although all the beaches of the country are in the parameters of pollutants considered suitable, in the states of Guerrero, Nayarit, and Michoacán some are in the pollution limit to be suitable.

The monitoring carried out by Semarnat is responsible for establishing, from the analysis of water, which are the beaches in which there is a greater number of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and worms that can harm health, present in the wastewater that, sometimes, they are discharged directly to the sea.

What happens if you get contaminated on the beach

According to environmental authorities, some of the diseases and symptoms that can be caused by microorganisms present in seawater are gastroenteritis, salmonellosis, cholera, otitis, conjunctivitis, respiratory and skin diseases.

Also, fever, colds, gastroenteritis, diarrhea and digestive ailments could occur.

To decide when and where it is better to swim, Semarnat recommends respecting the warnings of the authorities, avoid swimming next to drainages or mouths of rivers and lagoons, as well as being aware of the climatic conditions before and during your visit to the beach.

In case of heavy rains during the day, it is recommended to wait at least one day to swim on beaches located in “open sea”, and three if they are in small and closed bays, as well as in coastal lagoons.

It also suggests that before swimming or practicing any water sport observe that the water is not dirty, smelly, cloudy or with foams of unusual coloration. If you find one or more characteristics as indicated, refrain from doing activities on that beach.

If you present any symptoms such as fever, intestinal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, earache, severe and constant headache, eye or skin irritation, environmental authorities recommend consulting a doctor immediately.

If you do not present any symptoms of the aforementioned, despite having swum in contaminated waters, suggest avoiding a new dive and keeping alert of your own health condition.
