IEnova will be the partner that will store its imported fuel in 2020 to supply its gas stations in Sonora and Baja California.
BP began to become independent from Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) as its supplier of gasoline and diesel.
The English company and IEnova announced the signing of a long-term contract to use 50% of the initial capacity of the marine terminal Centro Energético La Jovita, in Ensenada, Baja California.
With the agreement, BP will be able to store up to 500,000 barrels of energy in this terminal, to supply 54 service stations in the northern region of Baja California and Sonora.
In April, IEnova announced the Baja Refinados project, which consists of the development, construction and operation of a marine terminal for receiving, storing and delivering petroleum products, mainly gasoline and diesel.
“With an initial capacity of 1 million barrels, this terminal will contribute to the energy security of Baja California and will promote competitive prices for gasoline and other refined products in the region.”
With an investment of approximately 130 million dollars, Baja Refinados will generate around 600 jobs during its construction. The terminal is expected to start commercial operation during the second half of 2020.
The oil company will have the option of acquiring up to 25% of the capital of the terminal once it enters into operation.
BP has 349 service stations in operation in 20 states and serves 500,000 Mexican consumers daily. Its goal in Mexico is to open 1,500 gas stations by 2021.
Founded in 1909, the firm directed by Robert Dudley is worth 152,600 million dollars (mdd), employs 74,034 people and invoices 251,940 million dollars.
