We are all accustomed to paying for car insurance by the month or by the year, but the amount never changes no matter how much or how little we drive our car. Well, now there’s another option — at least in Mexico — and it comes in the form of a phone app called Kimmo.
Kimmo is an innovative app that tracks the number of kilometers that you drive and then bills you for car insurance based on that number. The rate per kilometer is very low, only $0.17 MXN or around $0.008 USD — less than a penny.
The per kilometer charge is added to a monthly base insurance rate that is determined by the particular vehicle you are insuring.
In the case of my 2017 Nissan, I was quoted a monthly base rate of $218.19 MXN ($11.48 USD) for coverage that included theft of the vehicle, roadside assistance, medical coverage, liability and legal assistance.

You can obtain a price quote and/or coverage directly through the Kimmo phone app.
The insurance company that will be holding and administering your policy is a well-known one in Mexico, HDI Seguros.
Great Option for Retirees and Part-Time Expats
We have quite a few friends from either the United States or Canada who only live in Mexico part-time, but own and insure a vehicle here full-time. This plan would benefit them greatly and could cut their insurance rates by up to 80%.
My wife and I live in Mexico full-time, but we don’t drive every day because we’re retired.
Just out of curiosity, I decided to see how much it would have cost me to use Kimmo based on the number of kilometers we drove last year. It turns out that I would have paid around 45% less if I had used Kimmo instead of my current insurance.
