Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador – the president elect of Mexico – has put forward an austerity plan that will eliminate 30% of the budget currently spent on privileges for senators and congressmen.

Legislators from AMLO’s Morena party will introduce the new rules to eliminate generous benefits such as performance bonuses, medical expenses, unemployment insurance, Christmas bonus ‘top up’ and subsidies for gasoline – car payments – phone use and meals.
Budgets in other areas will be reduced – including travel, staff hirings and base salaries for senators and congress members.

The measures will save an estimated 500 million pesos this year and 1.5 billion in 2019.
