Mexican consumers will have more electricity supply options with the official entry of the new electricity suppliers.
The Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) has approved the entry of three companies that will be allowed to compete with the subsidiary of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to offer basic electric power in homes and businesses.
According to El Financiero, the Energy Regulatory Commission has granted permission to BH Energy Supply Link, T & M Government Representation, and the SUBACE Centre, the latter created by the former Mexican Electricians Union.
T & M Government Liaison and Representation became only the second ever company to compete in Mexico’s electricity market on August 28, 2017, when the CRE granted the company its permit to become a basic electricity supplier.
SUBACE is part of the Mexican Electricians Union’s strategy to reintegrate more than 44,000 workers who were laid off in October 2009 when a decree issued by former President Felipe Calderón initiated the process of eradicating the union of electricians.
Now, with the permission of the CRE, SUBACE is allowed to bid for contracts that allow the purchase of electricity at low cost to users who consume at a retail level.
In an interview with El Financiero, Víctor Ramírez, executive director of the National Association of Solar Energy (Anes), said that the three new participants will seek to buy electricity in the Long Term Auctions.
He also stressed that with the entry of more players, Mexican consumers will have four competitors to choose from; which, in turn, will make the industry more competitive plus facilitate interconnections for solar energy.
